A common mistake is to overdo the heat. Tired aching muscles certainly like warmth - it helps the blood flow through the muscle delivering fresh oxygen and nutrients, and disposing of accumulated waste products. But, if you use too hot a heat source, the receptors in the skin detect it as pain ... in which case the muscle 'tenses up'! Too much heat can also mottle the skin. Don't overdo the heat ... muscles prefer warmth!
