About the Osteopath

Michael Smith is a member of the British Osteopathic Association, the largest professional organization of osteopaths in the United Kingdom.

He is a graduate of the British School of Osteopathy, founded in 1917 and the oldest and largest osteopathic college in Europe. He has taught osteopathic technique on the British School of Osteopathy undergraduate course.

He has a particular interest in chronic pain conditions (where the patient has suffered with the problem for longer than six months). Where appropriate, and only with the patient's consent, dry needling (the use of acupuncture needles for pain relief) is sometimes used along with regular osteopathic techniques.

All osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) under the Osteopaths Act (1993).

The GOsC is the statutory body responsible for the profession, similar in its role to that performed by the General Medical Council for the medical profession. It is a criminal offence for an individual to claim to be an osteopath who is not registered with the GOsC. The GOsC registration number of Michael Smith is 1/3446/F.
